Last April I sat down with my principal and showed her a catalog of available materials and pitched the purchase for my reluctant readers. She liked the idea and gave me $700 to purchase a wide range of materials in Permabound format for the library. The books have been a great success with the students. Unfortunately, some of the teachers are more difficult to sway. They like the books but won't let the students count them as reading on their logs. Sheesh. Tough crowd!TYRaineshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04671040112389183217noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3447246927162965311.post-20638285334879309152010-02-27T11:30:59.807-08:002010-02-27T11:30:59.807-08:00It would be nice to see parents parenting, instead...It would be nice to see parents parenting, instead of censoring their children. Any material that has subject that some people might consider inappropriate or too advanced is actually providing a very important opportunity called a teaching moment. It is our job as adults in a community, educators, and parents to take these moments and raise children to be responsible contributing members of the community. How are they going to develop the judgement and reasoning skills necessary to make decisions about these issues when they approach adulthood if we keep sheltering them.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3447246927162965311.post-90578273632674408522010-02-23T18:37:14.411-08:002010-02-23T18:37:14.411-08:00Funny, I always thought picture books would be the...Funny, I always thought picture books would be the last to go electronic. I don't even have a baby yet and I am already amassing a list of titles that are a must. I also can't imagine purchasing e-books for my children. I don't have room to talk, since I have only checked them out for myself and have never purchased any. I like having the convenience of having something small for educational purposes and reading in line, but other than that I prefer the real thing. I rarely read books twice because I feel like there are so many books out there I might be missing one if I spend my time rereading, so I usually check out or donate what has been purchased or given as a gift. I will reread for a child's benefit though. I like e-books because they offer another form of media, but its not for me.Mrs. Foxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14210716024530125249noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3447246927162965311.post-59873628574233556302009-09-22T15:38:44.867-07:002009-09-22T15:38:44.867-07:00The science website is very cool! It makes you wonder what the authorities think the role of the library is. And does the school have a cafeteria? What's the relationship? Do we want students to grab a coke or coffee instead of lunch? Lots of questions.Adele Fasickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14839939459411637292noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3447246927162965311.post-88142981113596146852009-09-13T13:54:01.870-07:002009-09-13T13:54:01.870-07:00Professor Fasick,

But, it was the comments from librarians that really made me think more deeply about those unanswered questions. My greatest concern for the library is the inclusion of the coffee bar. I keep thinking is this a good idea in a high school? It sounds to me like the administrators are attempting to make their media commons more like a college, but even colleges still have books.
Teresa Raines
Libr 263TYRaineshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04671040112389183217noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3447246927162965311.post-23982789192564085632009-08-29T20:07:44.026-07:002009-08-29T20:07:44.026-07:00This is a link to a really nice obituary about Ms....This is a link to a really nice obituary about Ms. Kushkin: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/22/books/22kuskin.html?ref=booksTYRaineshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04671040112389183217noreply@blogger.com
